CHRE’s work with patients and the public

We promote the health and well-being of patients and the public in the regulation of health professionals. This gives us an insight into the priorities, preferences and experiences of patients and the public. It also helps us to discuss with patients and the public their understanding of risk.

We work with and for patients and the public in a number of ways.

  • Our Council are all lay people – none of them are health professionals. They help us to focus on improving patient safety through regulating health professionals with patients’ perspectives in mind
  • We set up a Public Stakeholder Network in March 2009 which is open for anyone to join
  • We consult the public and carry out research. We advertise these opportunities on our website in the give us your views section
  • We hold meetings with the public in the four countries to give information on new projects and to increase understanding of health professional regulation
  • We produce videos for patients and the public
  • We offer report summaries as well as our full documents.

For more information see our external relations plan and strategic communications plan.

Who regulates health and social care professionals?

The regulators have produced a leaflet to help the public to ensure that they receive care and treatment from professionals who meet the right standards.

Guidance on reporting concerns (England)

Guidance in the other three UK countries is under development

We have produced guidance to help you to raise concerns about the healthcare that you have received. It is intended to help you to find the best place to take your concerns, and to help you understand the different roles of the organisations which could be involved in handling your complaint. We have also produced an Easy Read version.

The guidance can be found here.
